Wild Rice Guys
We are the Wild Rice Guys and our family has been harvesting wild rice since 1981. Dawson Cameron is a third-generation wild rice farmer, having grown up in the rice fields with his Grandpa Rusty, of Rusty's Wild Rice
In 2012, Dawson and his brother, Gavin Carnegie, started selling wild rice at the Regina Farmers Market. Soon after, they began "popping" their wild rice into flavourful, and ready-to-eat snacks, leading them to create "Wild Rice Guys" in 2019.
Saskatchewan is the perfect location to grow wild rice because there are so many lakes. Wild rice grows best in 1 to 4 feet of water, and therefore it is harvested by boat. We use "air boats", a flat boat with a big fan on the back and a large, 12 foot header on the front. As we drive around, the "ripe" rice sways and falls off the crop into the boat, while the "non-ripe" rice continues to germinate. We can harvest each lake 2 to 4 times per year.
